The One True Sign of the Cross
While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah.” Luke 11:29
The crowd seemed to be a mixed bunch. First, there were those who wholeheartedly believed in Jesus. The Twelve, for example, left everything behind to follow Him. His mother and various other holy women were His faithful followers. But within the growing crowd, it appeared that there were many who questioned Jesus and wanted some form of proof of Who He was. Thus, they wanted a sign from Heaven.
A sign from Heaven would have been some visible proof of Who Jesus was. Granted, Jesus had already performed numerous miracles. But it seems that this was not enough. They wanted more—and that desire is a clear indication of a stubbornness of heart and a lack of faith. So Jesus could not and would not give them the sign they wanted.
Instead, Jesus says that the only sign they will receive is the sign of Jonah. Recall that the sign of Jonah was not very appealing. He was thrown over the side of a boat and swallowed by a whale, where he remained for three days before being spit up on the shores of Nineveh.
Jesus’ sign would be similar. He would suffer at the hands of the religious leaders and civil authorities, be killed and be placed in a tomb. And then, three days later, He would rise. But His Resurrection was not one in which He came forth with rays of light for all to see; rather, His post-Resurrection appearances to those who already believed were subtle – they only recognized him in the breaking of the bread.
The lesson for us is that God will not convince us of the matters of faith through powerful and Hollywood-like public displays of God’s greatness. Instead, the “sign” we are offered is an invitation to die with Christ so that we can personally begin to experience the new life of the Resurrection. This gift of faith is internal, not public. Our death to sin is something we personally do, and the new life we receive can only be seen by others by the witness of our lives that are changed.
Reflect, today, upon the true sign God has given you. If you are one who seems to be waiting for some visible sign from our Lord, wait no longer. Look at the crucifix, see Jesus’ suffering and death, and choose to follow Him, bringing death to all sin and selfishness. Die with Him, enter the tomb with Him and allow Him to bring you forth renewed this Lent, so that you can be transformed.
How big a sign do I need to repent and follow the Lord?
Let us pray:
My crucified Lord, I gaze upon the crucifix and see in Your death the greatest act of love ever known. Give me the grace I need to follow You to the tomb so that Your death will triumph over my sins. Free me, dear Lord, during this Lenten journey so that I will be able to fully share in Your new life of the Resurrection.

La Única Señal Verdadera de la Cruz
En aquel tiempo, la multitud se apiñaba alrededor de Jesús y comenzó a decirles: “La gente de este tiempo es una gente perversa. Pide una señal, pero no se le dará más señal que la de Jonás.” Lucas 11:29
La multitud parecía ser un grupo mixto. Primero, estaban aquellos que creían en Jesús de todo corazón. Los Doce, por ejemplo, dejaron todo atrás para seguirlo. Su madre y varias otras santas mujeres fueron sus fieles seguidoras. Pero dentro de la creciente multitud, parecía que había muchos que cuestionaban a Jesús y querían algún tipo de prueba de quién era él. Por lo tanto, querían una señal del Cielo.
Una señal del cielo habría sido una prueba visible de quién era Jesús. Por supuesto, Jesús ya había realizado numerosos milagros. Pero parece que esto no fue suficiente. Querían más, y ese deseo es una clara indicación de la terquedad de corazón y la falta de fe. Así que Jesús no podía ni quería darles la señal que querían.
En cambio, Jesús dice que la única señal que recibirán es la señal de Jonás. Recuerde que la señal de Jonás no era muy atractiva. Fue arrojado por la borda de un barco y tragado por una ballena, donde permaneció durante tres días antes de ser escupido en las costas de Nínive.
La señal de Jesús sería similar. Sufriría a manos de los líderes religiosos y las autoridades civiles, sería asesinado y colocado en una tumba. Y luego, tres días después, resucitaría. Pero Su resurrección no fue una en la que salió con rayos de luz para que todos lo vieran; más bien, Sus apariciones posteriores a la Resurrección a aquellos que ya creían fueron sutiles: lo reconocieron al partir el pan.
La lección para nosotros es que Dios no nos convencerá de los asuntos de la fe a través de demostraciones públicas poderosas y similares a las de Hollywood de la grandeza de Dios. En cambio, la “señal” que se nos ofrece es una invitación a morir con Cristo para que podamos comenzar personalmente a experimentar la vida nueva de la Resurrección. Este don de fe es interno, no público. Nuestra muerte al pecado es algo que hacemos personalmente, y la nueva vida que recibimos solo puede ser vista por otros por medio del testimonio de nuestras vidas que son cambiadas.
Reflexionad hoy sobre la verdadera señal que Dios os ha dado. Si eres de los que parece estar esperando alguna señal visible de nuestro Señor, no esperes más. Mire el crucifijo, vea el sufrimiento y la muerte de Jesús, y elija seguirlo, trayendo la muerte a todo pecado y egoísmo. Morid con Él, entrad con Él en el sepulcro y dejad que os saque renovados esta Cuaresma, para que seáis transformados.
¿Qué tan grande es la señal que necesito para arrepentirme y seguir al Señor?
Oremos:
Mi Señor crucificado, miro el crucifijo y veo en Tu muerte el mayor acto de amor jamás conocido. Dame la gracia que necesito para seguirte hasta el sepulcro para que tu muerte triunfe sobre mis pecados. Libérame, querido Señor, durante este camino de Cuaresma para que pueda participar plenamente en Tu vida nueva de la Resurrección.
