The Language of Jesus
Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him. John 8:30
Jesus had been teaching in veiled but deeply profound ways about Who He was. In prior passages, He referred to Himself as the “bread of life,” the “living water,” the “light of the world,” and He even took upon Himself the ancient title of God “I AM.” Furthermore, He continually identified Himself with the Father in Heaven as His Father with Whom He was perfectly united and by Whom He was sent into the world to do His will. For example, just prior to the line above, Jesus states clearly, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me” (John 8:28). And it was because of this that many came to believe in Him. But why?
As John’s Gospel continues, Jesus’ teaching remains mysterious, deep and veiled. After Jesus speaks profound truths about Who He is, some listeners come to believe in Him, while others become hostile to Him. What is the difference between those who come to believe and those who ultimately kill Jesus? The simple answer is faith. Both those who came to believe in Jesus and those who orchestrated and supported His murder heard the same teaching of Jesus. Yet their reactions were so very different.
The same is true for us today. Just like those who heard these teachings for the first time from Jesus’ own lips, we also are presented with the same teaching. We are given the same opportunity to listen to His words and either receive them with faith or reject them or be indifferent. Are you one of the many who came to believe in Jesus because of these words?
Reading these veiled, mysterious and deep teachings of Jesus as they are presented in the Gospel of John requires a special gift from God if these words will have any impact upon our lives whatsoever. Faith is a gift. It’s not just a blind choice to believe. It’s a choice based on seeing. But it’s a seeing made possible only by an interior revelation from God to which we give our assent. Thus, Jesus as the Living Water, the Bread of Life, the great I AM, the Light of the World, and the Son of the Father will only make sense to us and will only have an effect upon us when we are open to and receive the interior light of the gift of faith. Without that openness and reception, we will remain either hostile or indifferent.
Reflect, today, upon the deep, veiled and mysterious language of God. When you read this language, especially in the Gospel of John, what is your reaction? Ponder your reaction carefully; and, if you find you are any less than one who has come to understand and believe, then seek the grace of faith this day so that our Lord’s words will powerfully transform your life.
Let us pray:
My mysterious Lord, Your teaching about Who You are is beyond human reason alone. It is deep, mysterious and glorious beyond all understanding. Please give me the gift of faith so that I may come to know Who You are as I ponder the richness of Your holy Word. I believe in You, dear Lord. Help my unbelief.

El lenguaje de Jesús

Jesús había estado enseñando de manera velada pero muy profunda acerca de quién era Él. En pasajes anteriores, se refirió a sí mismo como el “pan de vida”, el “agua viva”, la “luz del mundo”, e incluso tomó sobre sí mismo el antiguo título de Dios “YO SOY”. Además, continuamente se identificó con el Padre del Cielo como Su Padre con quien estaba perfectamente unido y por quien fue enviado al mundo para hacer su voluntad. Por ejemplo, justo antes de la línea de arriba, Jesús dice claramente: “Cuando levantes al Hijo del Hombre, entonces te darás cuenta de que YO SOY, y que nada hago por mi cuenta, sino que digo solo lo que el Padre me enseñó. (Juan 8:28). Y fue por esto que muchos llegaron a creer en Él. ¿Pero por qué?
A medida que continúa el Evangelio de Juan, la enseñanza de Jesús sigue siendo misteriosa, profunda y velada. Después de que Jesús dice profundas verdades acerca de quién es Él, algunos oyentes llegan a creer en Él, mientras que otros se vuelven hostiles hacia Él. ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre los que llegan a creer y los que finalmente matan a Jesús? La respuesta simple es la fe. Tanto los que llegaron a creer en Jesús como los que orquestaron y apoyaron Su asesinato escucharon la misma enseñanza de Jesús. Sin embargo, sus reacciones fueron muy diferentes.
Lo mismo es cierto para nosotros hoy. Al igual que aquellos que escucharon estas enseñanzas por primera vez de los propios labios de Jesús, también se nos presenta la misma enseñanza. Se nos da la misma oportunidad de escuchar Sus palabras y recibirlas con fe o rechazarlas o ser indiferentes. ¿Eres uno de los muchos que llegaron a creer en Jesús por estas palabras?
Leer estas enseñanzas veladas, misteriosas y profundas de Jesús tal como se presentan en el Evangelio de Juan requiere un don especial de Dios si estas palabras tendrán algún impacto en nuestras vidas. La fe es un regalo. No es solo una elección ciega creer. Es una elección basada en ver. Pero es un ver que sólo es posible gracias a una revelación interior de Dios a la que damos nuestro asentimiento. Así, Jesús como el Agua Viva, el Pan de Vida, el gran YO SOY, la Luz del Mundo y el Hijo del Padre sólo tendrá sentido para nosotros y sólo tendrá un efecto sobre nosotros cuando estemos abiertos y recibir la luz interior del don de la fe. Sin esa apertura y recepción, permaneceremos hostiles o indiferentes.
Reflexionad hoy sobre el lenguaje profundo, velado y misterioso de Dios. Cuando lees este lenguaje, especialmente en el Evangelio de Juan, ¿cuál es tu reacción? Reflexione sobre su reacción cuidadosamente; y, si encuentras que eres menos que alguien que ha llegado a entender y creer, entonces busca la gracia de la fe este día para que las palabras de nuestro Señor transformen poderosamente tu vida.
Oremos:
Mi misterioso Señor, Tu enseñanza acerca de Quién eres está más allá de la sola razón humana. Es profundo, misterioso y glorioso más allá de todo entendimiento. Por favor, dame el don de la fe para que pueda llegar a saber Quién eres Tú mientras reflexiono sobre la riqueza de Tu santa Palabra. Yo creo en Ti, amado Señor. Ayuda mi incredulidad.
